Leaving the Cave
Redesigned senses are fracturing our shared reality
HEADNOTE: This is one in a series of posts on how AI and other innovations could turn us into superhumans, or posthumans, depending on the choices we make. This post focuses on changes to our five senses. Companion posts focus on changes to our bodies, thinking, relationships, sexuality, as well whether these changes might lead to a global mind.

I sometimes feel a childlike thrill thinking about what lies ahead, like I did when riding up to the gates of Coney Island, not the famous one, but the one near Cincinnati, which was just as magical to me. I remember gripping the safety bar on the Shooting Star, my heart pounding as we climbed toward the sky, knowing everything was about to change.
That's how I imagine it might feel to suddenly see like an eagle, smell like a bear, or hear like an elephant. We humans have long been confined within the senses we were born with. Evolution drew lines to keep our perceptions tuned for survival. But now, AI, biotech, and sensory engineering are beginning to redraw these ancient boundaries.
We could soon be experiencing a world far richer and more complex than anything our ancestors could have known. Just as I've written before about superhuman bodies, we're now facing superhuman senses: vision that pierces darkness and distance, hearing that captures the subtlest vibrations, touch that simulates any texture, and vastly augmented experiences of smell and taste.
But unlike that roller coaster ride, this won’t be a fleeting thrill; it will be a permanent shift. Our senses will be redesigned. We’ll begin to perceive signals that were once invisible to us and realities evolution didn’t prepare us for. Someone will have to manage them.
As Plato anticipated, we are emerging from our caves, but this time our biology itself created the shadows. What lies beyond may be dazzling, disorienting, and deeply unequal.
Some changes are already underway, others will arrive in the next decade, and still more may reshape humanity later in this century. At every stage, we’ll have as much to fear as to welcome.
Seeing Beyond Evolution
Plato built his Parable of the Cave around a single sense: vision. Thoreau called the eye "the jewel of the body,” and most of us instinctively agree that sight feels like our primary link to the world. We know how profoundly life changes when vision is lost. But we're just beginning to understand how profoundly life can change when vision is expanded.
The revolution in how we see began with repair, with using corrective lenses and smart glasses to help the visually impaired read text, recognize faces, describe scenery, and navigate unfamiliar spaces. These tools are growing more sophisticated by the day, and developers are already pushing past restoration into augmentation. The goal isn't just to help people see again; it’s to help us see in brand new ways.
Contact lenses that let you see heat? They're coming soon. Scientists in China are packing nanoparticles into contact lenses that reveal heat signatures without surgery and with no batteries required. Laser eye surgery already offers vision sharper than 20/20, with improved night clarity and reduced glare. These are early steps toward a future where we might be able to zoom from lunar craters to the cells in our own skin in a blink.
But that's just the beginning. By mid-century, some of us may be seeing through bionic eyes or brain-connected implants. These devices will translate infrared, ultraviolet, and even thermal signals into visible information, letting us perceive textures, patterns, and energies that were once invisible. Some implants already overlay real-time data onto our field of view, showing directions, translations, and even someone's emotional cues, folding information directly into perception.
The most radical vision upgrades skip the eyes entirely. Neural implants, like Blindsight, send visual data straight to the brain's cortex through ultra-thin microelectrode arrays. Here's how it works: a camera captures the world around you, an AI translates that visual information into electrical patterns, and your brain learns to interpret those patterns as sight.
Vision here isn’t being restored; it’s being redesigned. Looking at a city skyline, you might see semantic overlays showing who built each structure, how the buildings function, and what their histories contain. The visual prosthesis could highlight safe paths, automatically label faces, or outline obstacles in real time.
Vision becomes something much more than seeing; it becomes navigation, memory, and story all woven together.
The flood of new detail could be exhilarating or exhausting. Either way, the boundaries of perception are shifting. We're heading into a world where what you see isn't what I see, a world much more individualized than it has ever been.
Managed Reality
Our brains didn’t evolve to handle this flood of new sensory inputs. We’ll need help sorting through it all, and AI systems are being designed to do just that. They’ll decide what to show us, what to hide, and what to emphasize. They’ll shape what we notice and what we forget. Just as we fought for clean air and public parks, we may one day need to protect the parts of perception we still experience together, to fight for a shared sensory ground that anchors us despite our differences.
In Plato’s cave, the question was, who controls the shadows? Now we must ask: Who decides what you perceive?
It will likely be AI, but who programs its choices? Each of us, or the corporations designing these enhancements?

In a decade, AI may deliver personalized sound streams with near-superhuman hearing. By midcentury, you might have a personal AI curating what sounds reach your ears, a digital gatekeeper for your consciousness. Imagine Spotify, but instead of music, it’s programming your entire soundscape. You could be rushing through Penn Station, but instead of the usual chaos, all you hear is your partner's voice from 3,000 miles away. You’re serene, focused. But you’re also missing the toddler screaming near the tracks, the rush of footsteps, and the urgent sounds of the moment. The AI decided those weren’t relevant. You may disagree.
It's one thing to curate your own sensory reality; it’s another to outsource the curation, and lose track of who's doing the curating. When perception is filtered by invisible systems, the boundary between choice and manipulation blurs. What feels like clarity may be omission.
The Sensory Divide
Access to upgrades will almost certainly be extremely unequal. Experiences of enhanced sensory riches may become a class marker. Picture someone with a $50,000 implant that brings back the scent of their grandmother's garden, while their neighbor smells only car exhaust from the street. Same world, yet different realities, divided by cost. Now multiply that across all five senses, and the gap widens fast.
Price disparities are easy to see. AirPods, Pixel Buds, and similar devices are affordable for most people. Electronic noses (E-noses) that can smell things we can’t? Today they'll cost you over $50,000. By contrast, bionic eyes cost over $100,000. Prices may drop over time, but cutting-edge upgrades will likely stay out of reach for most.
Personalized scent design could become another clear line between rich and poor. Osmo already uses its proprietary Olfactory Intelligence (OI) technology to create bespoke scent packages for museums, brands, and beauty products. These are unique, AI-designed odors no one has ever experienced before. The technology is unlikely to be affordable for most of us very soon.
If access follows the same pattern as other technologies, the wealthy may come to inhabit sensory worlds the rest of us cannot enter.
Living Apart Together
As each of us builds a personal sensory array, we may increasingly live apart together. Our redesigned perception may fracture what biology gave us: a shared reality.
We already see hints of this when friends and families sit side by side, absorbed in glowing screens and private soundscapes. But imagine how much more isolated we’ll be when our enhanced eyes reveal different slices of the UV spectrum, and our E-noses decode scentscapes tuned to a dog’s world for me and a pig’s for you. Even sharing a meal, it might literally taste and smell like two different events.
Touch may divide us even further. I might be making dinner while you sit beside me in a lightweight haptic suit, feeling warm rain in the Bahamas or embracing someone far away, absorbed in distant sensations while I chop actual carrots. I reach out, but you’re not really there.
What's most troubling is that this may reshape human connections. One person tuned to an enhanced moment, the other grounded in the ordinary. Presence will persist, but often out of sync. You might be fully there; just not here.
We may have left the cave to explore, but we could wander alone, each in a world no one else can touch, not because we’re lost but because we’re no longer in the same world.
When Nature Pales
We’ve seen how each sense might be individually enhanced, sharpened, filtered, or redesigned. But this may be just the beginning. What if your senses started mixing? Engineers are designing ways to taste color, hear texture, feel sound, artificial synesthesias crafted for individual minds.
Imagine sitting down to a fusion-enhanced movie. Your taste modification device shifts the sensations on your tongue to match the plot. Haptic straps simulate the racing cars and the romantic touches. Your E-nose brings in the smells of the street, the stores, and the sea. You hear a film score composed just for you with its emotional arc tuned to your biometric state.
Some will resist these experiences. Their restraint may be admired, but they’ll likely feel increasingly isolated and perhaps even viewed as “sensorily impoverished” in cultures where fusion is the norm. As augmented perception becomes more immersive, natural reality may start to feel flat. Why watch an unenhanced sunset when you can see one with heat signatures and UV trails while listening to the rays sing as they sink into the sea?
The world we once shared may begin to pale beside the worlds our new senses construct. Once this divergence begins, we may face a choice: continue building together or retreat into private worlds.
Leaving the Cave—or Staying Inside?
We're trading shadows for light, but not everyone may get the same illumination. Some could leave the cave and enter dazzling worlds of augmented color, synthetic flavor, and curated touch. Others might stay behind out of reverence for the unaugmented, what we once called the real.
The commons of the senses, our unfiltered reality, may need protection as fiercely as air or water. The cave we're leaving gave us a common world. The challenge is whether we can build a new commons in our expanded reality.

Yup. Truth. And a powerful essay on Ai. I don't know much about it, however, the format here and structure entirced me to continue reading. So I'll focus on your amazing structure. A favorite analogy of mine for the essay is the eye chart, when you this big E, at the top of the chart when you take an eye test. A essay should start with a big E, you know, something everybody can recognize. The gambit of the essay is not making any demands on you emotionally or intellectually. It's sort of setting something up that's undeniable. Something like "I'm sitting here at the window with this tree. It's snowing." I mean, the reader can't say, bullshit, I don't buy it. And then as the letters get smaller the essay can move into areas of ambiguity and subtlety, or fantasy and hypothesis. The essay should start in Illinois and get to Oz.
I do believe that you are a powerful thinker and that you have you mad skills. And because of this I wish for some sort of correspondence with you.
